After firing 32 goals as Atletico finished third in La Liga last season and reached the Champions League final, Griezmann, was Euro 2016 top scorer as hosts France finished runners-up to Portugal. He had been very unlucky to lost the both the finals though. There were seven UEFA Champions League goals as Atletico Madrid got to a second final in three years , but Real Madrid beat them in the penalty shootout, after the match finished 1-1 in normal time.

Athletico Madrid were awarded a penalty in the second half after Pepe's foul on Fernando Torres. But Griezmann missed the penalty in Milan. Had he converted it, it could have been boosted Athletico's chances for clinching the title, which ultimately failed after Madrid beat them on penalties.

Griezmann was the Player of the Tournament and won the adidas Golden Boot at UEFA EURO 2016, scoring six goals including two against both the Republic of Ireland and, in the semi-finals, Germany. Once again, though, his side was beaten in the final, this time to Portugal. Griezmann had a chance to score in the 10 th minute. Payet floated a gorgeous diagonal ball into the box and Griezmann's header was looping into the top left corner, only for Goal keeper Rui Patricio to pushes it over.

‘It’s cruel and magnificent at the same time,’ Griezmann said after the final. Had luck been his side, he would have a real chance to clinch the ballon d'Or, where team success will be valued over individual performance.
